Odour Removal
When it comes to odour removal, Juvenaire has extensive experience and can provide solutions to tackle the most challenging cases. No matter how strong or weak the odour, Juvenaire can remove it successfully and economically.
How Is Odour Detected?
Odour is interpreted by sensation, experience, knowledge and suggestion. There are two types of odours, “real odour” a pure sensation of smell transmitted to the olfactory lobe by the olfactory nerve. Conversely, the 2nd is “psychological odour or heightened awareness odour”. Unlike real odour people think they smell based on experience, suggestion and past experience. The latter is the most difficult odour to address for the restoration technician.
Odour Transmission
An increase in humidity amplifies odour as does the increase in temperature and evaporation. For this reason, extreme temperatures greatly increase the penetration of odours into soft furnishings.
Unfortunately, there is no one solution and relying solely on one form of deodorisation technique for all odour control will most likely result in ineffective odour removal. So, understanding what is causing the odour allows Juvenaire to put the steps in place to eliminate the odour completely.
Physical procedures for Odour Removal
Eliminate the source – The first universal step in odour control is to eliminate the source by removing the contaminants.
Clean the contaminated area – Walls, ceilings, hard floor surfaces, concrete, carpet, fabrics, drapery and other surfaces. For complete odour removal, clean areas that may not be in direct contact with the odour source.
Recreate the conditions of contamination – it may be necessary to increase temperatures to recreate similar conditions that created the odour. This enables porous materials to expand, allowing for improved penetration of spray, fog or ozone gas.
Sealing the source – It may be necessary to seal the exposed source. Sealing a surface exposed to malodour will prevent its evaporation into the atmosphere and therefore preventing odour.
The right process – Understanding the type of odour can assist in the right applications for its removal. For instance, odours such as protein odours, are much more difficult to remove than the odours caused by tobacco smoke.
Three Effective Meathods For Odour Removal & Control
Masking – To disguise an odour with a more pleasant odour or covering an odour with a fragrance that is stronger. Almost all deodorising agents contain a masking agent. Masking agents provide a temporary concealment, until a permanent odour control technique can be employed. More often than not, masking agents are the most effective means of counteracting psychological odour.
Pairing – A chemical that combines with the molecular structure of the malodour molecule or substance, by importing some of its own chemical properties. This transforms the odour-cell’s chemistry into a new, non-odorous compound. There are many water soluble deodorisers available as well as electronic deodorising such as ozone gas oxidisers.
Modification – By using a chemical that changes the molecular structure of the odour cell and eliminating its ability to produce the odour. There are three (3) types: 1. Attacking – counteracting; 2. killing – bacterial based odours (disinfecting agents) and 3. Enzymes – digesting.

From the 1950s to the early 1980s, buildings, equipment, ships, trains and vehicles were constructed using asbestos. As a result, on December 31 2003, a complete ban on the import and use of asbestos came into force.
As a guide, homes built from the year 1988 onwards should be asbestos free, while homes built before 1984 may contain a significant number of Asbestos Containing Materials.
