Has your carpet been contaminated by black or flood water recently?
Flood water contains bacteria as well as harmful viruses, sewage and toxins that can easily generate dangerous airborne particles such as mould spores. Flood water combined with sewage and toxic bacteria is considered black water contamination (category 3).
Even when flood or contaminated water is extracted from water damaged carpet, the inundated carpets may still be contaminated. Carpet as well as porous materials need to be removed from the house and discarded by a trained professional. The residue left on the carpet from sewage and bacteria can pose serious health concerns. Juvenaire highly recommends removing it all and replacing it with new carpets.
Clear or grey water contamination?
If your carpet has been flooded with any other type of water (category 1 & 2) that is, from burst internal pipes or discharge from dishwashers/washing machines, it is entirely possible to sanitise and restore your carpet to pre-loss condition.
It is crucial to take action promptly in order to carry out the proper drying of water damaged carpet. Not only will the correct drying of your carpet help you save it but it will also prevent mould growth. Mould grows rapidly in moist or damp conditions. More often than not, the underlay needs to be replaced as it retains moisture and contributes to further mould growth. Once the carpet has been successfully disinfected and dried, it is ready to be re-installed.
If meticulous cleaning and appropriate drying isn’t carried out as soon as possible by a trained technician (with the use of special equipment and specialist chemicals), your carpet may not be salvageable.
